Lower back pain is a common disorder that affects people of all ages and is very widespread in the global adult population. Some studies have shown that up to 23% of the world’s adults suffer from chronic low back pain. This population has also shown a one-year recurrence rate of 24% to 80%. In fact, some estimates of lifetime prevalence are as high as 84% in the adult population.
Lower back pain is not usually associated with a specific and readily identifiable anatomical cause or event that precipitated the problem. 85-95% of people examined by a health professional do not have a specific or known origin for the cause of their pain.
The realities of conventional medicine to treat back pain–drugs or the knife.
Drugs
In the US, chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like ibuprofen and aspirin is said to be responsible for 16,500 deaths each year. NSAIDs also result in over 100,000 people needing to be put in a hospital. Moreover, chronic NSAID use can cause stomach disorders and bleeding and can even exacerbate a number of chronic diseases including heart failure and hypertension. While the problems with overprescribing opiates are well documented, it sadly continues to persist.
The knife
At the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, researchers reviewed records from 1,450 patients in the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation database who had diagnoses of disc degeneration, disc herniation or radiculopathy, a nerve condition that causes tingling and weakness of the limbs. Half of the patients had surgery to fuse two or more vertebrae in hopes of curing low back pain. The other half had no surgery, even though they had comparable diagnoses.
After two years, only 26 per cent of those who had surgery had actually returned to work. That’s compared to 67 per cent of patients who didn’t have the surgery, even though they had the same exact diagnosis.
That translates to a resounding 74% failure rate! It also suggests that you have a 257% better chance of returning to work if you avoid surgery in the first place!
In another troubling finding, the researchers determined that there was a 41% increase in the use of painkillers, particularly opiates, in those who had the surgery. Last year we reported that deaths from addictive painkillers have doubled in the last 10 years.
“The study provides clear evidence that for many patients, fusion surgeries designed to alleviate pain from degenerating discs don’t work”, says the study’s lead author Dr Trang Nguyen, a researcher at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
There’s no going back after you’ve had the knife.

PEMF Therapy
Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is how I got rid of a twenty-six-year lower back problem. I broke my back in an accident in 1989 where I was on crutches for seven months due to the severity of the injury. In the end, I was left with chronic pain and stiffness. Over those years I spent $45K to $50K looking for a solution. I tried every alternative therapy I could find and many different practitioners for many of the treatments, but nothing lasted. The pain always came back. One day I discovered PEMF, did lots of research and finally had to purchase a system as I couldn’t find anyone offering it in Melbourne. Long story short, in less than two weeks the pain slowly melted away and that’s how I became involved with PEMF as a career. The pain has not returned…. But I’m on my system several times every day and will be for the rest of my life.
Backbridge by Dr Todd Sinett
I’m recommending this based on what I read in Tony Robbins book, ‘Life Force.’
The Backbridge is made up of 5 separate interlocking, foam arches that stack together for different levels of support. The base level is 5 cm, and each of the next 4 levels adds 3 cm up to a total of 18 cm. You simply lie on the arches to gently stretch your back for 2-3 minutes twice a day. It’s that simple.
Poor posture is one of the leading causes of back pain and skeletal misalignment. It’s common for people who are sitting for hours to be hunched over their computers, smartphones, etc. Approximately 30% more pressure is exerted on your spine when you are sitting versus standing. Over half of the back pain can be attributed to people who spend the day sitting at a desk.
Put the Backbridge on the floor or a bed. The highest point on the top of the Backbridge should between your shoulder blades. It should never hurt and should simply feel like a solid, comfortable stretch. For maximum stretch, your arms should be placed on the floor straight above your head or you can cross your hands across your chest.
The Egoscue Method
The Egoscue Method is a relatively new form of postural therapy, which was created to eliminate chronic pain and increase functional mobility. It is based on the premise to get and maintain the body in its natural alignment through what has been called postural therapy. Egoscue was developed to reduce chronic pain, not only in the back, but also in the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist and jaw.
The Egoscue Method combines the use of trained therapists who have the expertise to use technology to assess your posture and create a personalised series of exercises that will put your body back into balance, thus eliminating the dysfunction that is the source of your pain.
