PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. It is a field made with electricity and magnetism and delivered in pulses, and a PEMF device is a piece of equipment built to produce it.

This post covers what the name means, where the equipment came from and what a common format looks like.

What the name means

Electricity and magnetism are the two ingredients. A PEMF device uses them to create an electromagnetic field, and the word pulsed in the name tells you the field comes in pulses. People often say PEMF on its own, as a short label for the technology and for the devices that use it.

Devices differ in size and design. Some deliver low-level electromagnetic waves to the body of the person using them, and some are built to cover the whole body at once.

Where PEMF equipment came from

The United States, Western Europe, Japan and Russia are reported to have taken up PEMF devices early. Makers have since developed many kinds of device to create an electromagnetic field.

Mats and full-body equipment

One common format is the PEMF mat. It is a specially designed mat that a person lies on, and it surrounds the whole body with an electromagnetic field, so mats of this kind are known as full-body equipment.
